When it comes to growing patio fruit and vegetables, space need not be a problem. Any small sunny deck, patio, backyard or balcony has the potential to produce a tasty and healthy crop. Beyond that the choice is yours. Your pots can be ornamental or simple and of any material that you wish. It is worth bearing in mind at this point that terracotta is likely to dry out quicker than plastic and will require more frequent watering.
Most patio fruit and vegetables require a sunny position for best results. Watering is extremely important, keep well watered. Perhaps add some water retaining crystals to the compost before planting. While it won’t be necessary to feed short term crops such as Leaf Salad; others such as Beans, Tomatoes and other long term crops will require a weekly feed of a high potash vegetable or tomato fertiliser. Slow Release Fertiliser added to the compost before planting may be an option. Keep your container weed-free as any weeds will steal nutrients from your plants.
Aubergine Patio Baby - Spineless, dark purple, baby-sized (8cm) aubergine fruit. Compact 40-50cm tall plants, perfect for pots. Very early ripening variety, good to grow in the UK. Produces fruit all summer long. Can be grown in pots on a patio or greenhouse. AAS regional winner.
Courgette F1 Astia - A superb courgette, bearing a prolific crop of tasty, glossy, dark green fruits.
Pepper Snackabelle - Produces a small (50-60cm) bushy plant which needs no training. Small (6 x 6cm) sweet bell peppers which ripen from green to red. Eat fresh, but fruit stand up to grilling and stuffing. Best suited to container growing. May need a small cane for support as all the fruit ripen.
Chilli Hot Fajita - Hot but not too hot, great in Mexican food. Typical red, chilli-shaped fruit. Waxy skinned fruit means they store for longer. Can be grown in pots on a patio or greenhouse. 70,000 SHU.
Tomato Tumbling Bella - This amazing producer will keep you in cherry-sized fruit from July right through to October. Compact and cascading, great to snack on, or use as you would your favourite cherry tomato. In our opinion, the best hanging basket variety around.
Cucumber Patio Snacker - Good flavour, crunchy and 'non-bitter' peel. Can be grown in larger containers. High yielding and continuous cropping.
Ideal for window boxes, pots and containers or a veg patch approximately 5 m².
Multipurpose (soil less) either peat-based or peat-free, or soil-based (John Innes type). Good quality compost will have been balanced to contain the optimum amount of nutrients to get your plants off to a good start, as well as being sterilised to make sure that it does not contain any weeds or diseases. These are suitable for most containers.
