How to choose the best nut trees

Nut trees are a beautiful asset to any garden. They provide ornamental foliage, colourful leaves and elegant blossom, as well as lending maturity to planting schemes and providing a delicious, healthy crop of nuts! If you’d like to learn how to grow your own nut trees at home, then do check out our guide. These frequently asked questions will also help you choose the best nut tree for your outdoor space.

Which nut tree is the best for blossom?

Almond trees are spectacular in spring. The blush pink blossom covers the tree from March to April releasing a sweet scent to fill the garden. Almond ‘Ingrid' is a self-fertile variety and produces a crop of almonds after flowering without needing a pollination partner. The blossom is spectacular and the nuts are an added bonus!

Can I plant a hedge using nut trees?

Hazel trees put on up to 60cm of growth a year and make excellent hedging plants. Hazelnut ‘Kentish cobnut’ reaches 3m at maturity and reliably produces large crops of creamy hazelnuts around three years after planting. This hazel is available as a dormant bare root plant which makes planting in a hedge line easier without the top growth. Being native plants, hazel trees are a great addition to a wildlife garden.

Which is the best nut tree for yield in the UK?

If you’re after a large yield from your mature tree, you can’t go wrong with a walnut. These statuesque trees are heavy croppers. For the best results plant two walnuts next to each other, leaving enough room for them to expand, so they will pollinate each other in spring and have a boosted yield.

What is the best nut tree for a small garden?

Walnut ‘Europa’ is an excellent choice for a small garden. Maturing at 3.5m tall, this diminutive tree crops two years after planting with heavy yields of flavoursome healthy walnuts. Pop this tree into a large container and enjoy the ornamental silvery bark and long catkins in spring.
