How to choose cucumber seeds

With so many varieties available, selecting the right cucumber seeds depends on where you plan to grow them and the type of fruit you prefer. Here we’ll demystify the difference between greenhouse and outdoor varieties, and explain what F1 varieties are for.

What’s the difference between greenhouse and outdoor cucumbers?

The main difference between greenhouse cucumbers and outdoor varieties is their temperature requirements. Greenhouse fruits like ‘Telegraph Improved’ need warmth and protection to produce long, smooth-skinned fruits similar to those found in supermarkets, and outdoor 'Ridge' varieties like ‘Marketmore’ are shorter, bumpier, and much hardier; they are bred to crop successfully outside in the UK summer without glass protection.

What are F1 Hybrid cucumber seeds?

F1 Hybrid cucumber seeds are bred to increase disease resistance and vigour. ‘All Female’ F1 varieties produce no male flowers, so there’s no need to remove them to prevent bitter fruit. This makes the plants easier to manage.

Which cucumber seeds are best for pots?

The best cucumber seeds for pots are 'bush' varieties such as ‘Bush Champion’ or ‘Mini Muncher F1’. Unlike standard vining cucumbers that need supports, bush types have a more compact habit. They’re perfect for growing in large containers, patio bags, or even hanging baskets.

When should I sow cucumber seeds?

Sow heated greenhouse cucumbers from mid-February, unheated varieties from April, and outdoor seeds in late May or June once the risk of frost has passed.
