Clematis plants – more info

There are so many beautiful clematis that deciding which to grow can be difficult. Narrow down the choice by thinking about whether you want a large plant, such as a montana, or something small for a pot – 'Little Lemons' is a super-dwarf variety. Most clematis like their heads in the sun but some, including ‘Hagley Hybrid’ and ‘Nelly Moser’ cope well with shade. If you want large flowers, 'Niobe' has blooms that are up to 15cm across while Clematis vitalba has dainty star-like flowers.

Whatever you choose, give your clematis the best start by adding plenty of organic matter when planting and keeping it well watered until established.

Which clematis are best for covering a large area?

The montana varieties, ‘Double Strawberry Truffle’, ‘Red Velvet Truffle’ or ‘Champagne Truffle’, are the best clematis for covering a large area such as a fence or wall.

Which clematis flower in winter?

There are several clematis that flower in winter. 'Freckles' has beautifully marked flowers and will grow in semi-shade or sun. If you have a sheltered spot, ‘Winter Beauty’ will give you beautiful bell-like flowers.

Can you grow clematis in containers?

Clematis can be grown in containers. Make sure you use a large container, and fill it with a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3.
