Tomato Grafted Plants - The Black Tomato Indigo Rose

A unique tomato variety-packed full of antioxidants.

The Indigo Rose tomato is a true superfood. With extremely high levels of vitamins and antioxidants, this fruit is specially bred for extra nutrition. It even contains the same antioxidants as blueberries! A tomato plant with high disease resistance, the Black Indigo Rose also has a delicious smokey flavour with plummy overtones making it the perfect fresh snack or even better cooked. Harvesting from summer right through to the autumn you’ll have plenty of time to experiment with this truly unique tomato. Ensure the fruit ripens, past the fully black stage, when the skin becomes suffused with shades of indigo/rose before picking. Height 150-200cm (59-79"); spread 40-50cm (16-20").

What’s so good about grafted veg plants?

Grafting onto specific rootstocks, of course, creates bigger, better, more disease-resistant plants with increased yield. Consequently, we believe, the extra vigour which the plant obtains will provide even better protection to late Blight attack, and the plants will grow away from any infection even more rapidly.

Grow in the greenhouse or outdoors, little or no heating required. With excellent resistance to soil-borne pest and diseases - No more ring culture or grow bags you simply plant straight in the soil.

Caring for your Grafted Black Tomato Indigo Rose

Your tomato plant will perform well outdoors. Young tomatoes start out green but sunlight turns them black. At this stage, they will be as hard as bullets. As they ripen the fruits will soften and start turning red, from the bottom up. At this stage they are ready for picking however the longer you leave them then the sweeter they will taste. When they are fully ripe the skin beneath the calyx will be red but they can certainly be eaten before this final stage.

Cordon variety - One stem grown by pinching off side-shoots as they appear, needs staking and tying in.

Growing Information

The plants will perform well outdoors in most summers and can be planted out once the danger of frost has passed however they are particularly recommended for growing in a greenhouse where they will reach their full potential. Outdoors and in the greenhouse border plant 30cm (2ft) apart and provide a cane support. In the greenhouse, when the 10cm pot is well filled with roots, transfer the plant into a pot no smaller than 30cm (12") in diameter. The plants have a vigorous root system and are not suitable for growing in grow bags.

The plants should not be allowed to dry out and will need feeding with a liquid tomato feed twice a week once the fruit start to set. In hot, sunny weather damp down the floor of the greenhouse to increase the humidity. Misting the plants with water will aid fruit setting. This is best carried out around midday, but do not spray the foliage under strong direct sunlight as scorching may occur or on cool, dull days. Adequate support will be required from an early stage and the main stem should be tied in as the plants develop. The side shoots which appear at the leaf joints should be pinched out when they are about 2.5cm (1") in length. We recommend trimming the plants leaves to expose the fruit to the sun for the best flavour and darkest fruit. Grafted plants can produce 7-9 trusses in a greenhouse. The fruit should be allowed to fully ripen on the plant and be picked as required. Take care not to pick the fruit too early as the skin turns black before the fruit has fully ripened, they are ready to pick once they 'give' when lightly squeezed.
