Hydrangea macrophylla 'Salsa' is a stunning and compact mophead variety that captivates with its vibrant blooms and tidy growth habit. This hydrangea is particularly well-suited for smaller gardens, container arrangements, or as a striking addition to flower borders, where it can infuse bold summer colors. One of its most intriguing features is the way its flower color transforms with changes in soil pH, providing a dynamic visual display that evolves throughout the growing season. In neutral to alkaline soils, the large, rounded mophead flowers bloom in a vivid pink, while in more acidic conditions, they take on a rich purple-red hue, ensuring that this plant remains a focal point in any landscape.

Blooming from early summer to late summer, 'Salsa' produces long-lasting flowerheads that not only maintain their beauty but also age gracefully into the autumn months. The dark green, ovate foliage serves as a lush backdrop, enhancing the dramatic appearance of the flowers. Its compact and well-branched structure makes it an excellent choice for container gardening or for filling smaller planting spaces, allowing gardeners to enjoy its beauty even in limited areas. While it thrives in partial shade and benefits from protection against the harsh midday sun, it can also tolerate full sun in cooler climates, making it a versatile option for various garden settings.

To ensure optimal growth, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Salsa' prefers moist, well-drained, and fertile soil enriched with organic matter. The color of its blooms can be influenced by the soil pH, so gardeners may consider using ericaceous compost or specific soil additives to enhance the red or purple tones of the flowers. This hydrangea requires minimal maintenance; a light pruning after flowering—removing spent blooms and any weak stems in early spring—will keep it healthy and vibrant. Hardy in most UK locations, 'Salsa' benefits from some winter protection, especially in exposed sites, allowing it to thrive and bring joy to gardens year after year. Growing Information

Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.

Live Plants

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.
