When to sow runner bean seeds

Sow runner bean seeds under cover from April to plant out when the risk of frost has passed. Remember to harden the plants off first. You can sow directly into the ground after the last frost.

How to grow runner bean seeds

Use deep root trainers with one bean seed per module. They should germinate in 7-14 days. Prepare the ground well with plenty of organic matter and put up a strong support such as a wigwam of bamboo canes. Plant out after the last frost, putting a couple of plants on each cane.

Keep well-watered and pinch out the plants when they reach the top of the canes. Pick regularly to keep the plants cropping. Read our guide on how to grow bumper crops of beans for more tips.
