Rosmarinus officinalis, widely recognized as rosemary, is an evergreen shrub that exudes a sense of elegance with its upright, bushy growth habit. This woody perennial is characterized by its narrow, needle-like leaves, which are a deep, rich green on the upper side and display a striking white hue beneath. The aromatic foliage not only adds a lush visual appeal to gardens but also fills the air with a delightful fragrance, making it a cherished addition to both culinary and ornamental landscapes.

In terms of flowering, rosemary showcases small, tubular blossoms that range in color from pale blue to violet, typically gracing the plant from spring through early summer. Occasionally, these charming flowers may reappear in the autumn, providing a second wave of beauty to the garden. This resilient plant thrives in full sun and is adaptable to various soil types, preferring well-drained, light to medium soils while demonstrating a remarkable tolerance for poorer, sandy, or rocky conditions. However, it is essential to avoid heavy or waterlogged soils, as these can hinder its growth.

Once established, rosemary exhibits impressive drought tolerance, making it an ideal choice for low-maintenance gardens. It is hardy across most of the UK, although it may struggle in particularly exposed or frigid areas. This versatile herb serves multiple purposes, from enhancing culinary dishes to acting as an ornamental shrub or container plant. Additionally, it can be utilized as a low hedge or incorporated into Mediterranean and drought-tolerant gardens. Its strong aroma attracts bees and other pollinators, further enriching the garden ecosystem. To maintain its shape and prevent excessive woodiness, light pruning after flowering is recommended, while care should be taken to avoid cutting into older wood. With a height of approximately 150 cm (59 in) and a spread of around 100 cm (39 in), rosemary is a stunning and functional addition to any garden.

Growing instructions given on packet.

Sowing Information

In Mar-May sow thinly direct into finely raked, moist, warm soil at a depth of about 13mm ( 1?2"). Germination takes 10-21 days. Thin seedlings to 38cm (15") between plants. Can also be sown late Feb-Mar in a propagator on a windowsill at approx. 15-20°C (60-68°F). Transplant seedlings into 15cm (6") pots or direct outside. Grows best in well cultivated soil in a sunny position. To dry sage for winter use, hang stems in an airy shed or garage; when dry rub finely. Store in airtight containers.

Live Plants

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

All Suttons products should reach you in perfect condition, just as they left us. If you are dissatisfied in any way with their condition on arrival, please let us know within 14 days.
