Fig 'Rouge de Bordeaux' is a cherished traditional French variety, celebrated for its exceptional flavor, manageable size, and consistent fruit production. This fig tree yields small to medium-sized, rounded fruits that boast a striking dark purple skin, encasing a luscious, deep red flesh that is both sweet and jammy. The intense and complex flavor profile of these figs makes them a delightful choice for a variety of culinary uses, whether enjoyed fresh, dried, or transformed into preserves.

Typically, the 'Rouge de Bordeaux' fig tree produces a primary crop in late summer to early autumn, with the potential for a smaller breba crop in warmer climates during early summer. This variety not only offers delicious fruit but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of gardens and patios with its attractive, deeply lobed foliage. Its compact nature makes it an ideal candidate for container gardening or for training against a sunny wall, allowing gardeners with limited space to enjoy its beauty and bounty.

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, this fig tree is self-fertile and relatively easy to cultivate, requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape and productivity. While it is hardy in milder regions of the UK, it may need some protection from harsh frost, particularly when grown in containers. Overall, the 'Rouge de Bordeaux' fig is a wonderful addition to any garden, offering both ornamental charm and delicious fruit for the discerning gardener. Height: 300 cm (10 ft). Spread: 250 cm (8 ft).

Growing Information

Grow fig trees in a sheltered, sunny position. A warm, south facing site against a wall is ideal. Figs prefer a moisture retentive, fertile, well drained soil that is slightly alkaline. Prior to planting fig trees, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Figs have a vigorous growth habit but can be restricted by constructing a 60cm (2') square, open bottomed brick or concrete pit around the root system. Add a 15cm (6") layer of broken stone to the base of the pit. Alternatively plant figs in large patio containers using a well drained compost such as John Innes No.3. When growing fig trees in containers they should be repotted every two years. If figs are to be wall trained, install support wires prior to planting.

Live Plants

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

All Suttons products should reach you in perfect condition, just as they left us. If you are dissatisfied in any way with their condition on arrival, please let us know within 14 days. We are only liable for the cost of the goods as quoted on the website plus the cost of delivery if the goods are faulty.

Unlike many companies, we publish all of our reviews - good or bad - to give you, the customer, total transparency and peace of mind.
