Our Windowsill Mushroom Kits will allow anyone to grow Shiitake mushrooms from their very own windowsill. Handfuls of these delicious mushrooms will be just clutches away from your favourite dish. Shiitake is an attractive variety from the mushroom family. An intense taste when raw but, when cooked they are loved for their umami flavour. Shiitake mushrooms are completely versatile and make a great addition to vegetarian dishes with an Asian cuisine twist.

Mushrooms are tasty, low in calories, high in protein and a great source of fibre especially for those on plant-based diets. They provide you with vital vitamins including vitamin B, selenium, potassium and copper. With our handy kits, you’ll soon have this delicious and health beneficial vegetable at just the fraction of the cost.

Whether you’re a full-time gardener or beginner, this handy kit includes a base tray, lid, and pre spawned substrate and easy to follow instructions.

Planting and care:

Simply keep them moist and out of direct sunlight and your first crop should be ready to pick in a matter of weeks, plus you can expect at least another 2 pickings after that (See full instructions in Growing Info below).

These kits need to be started on receipt and are unsuitable for storage.

Growing Information

Growing Instructions:
This kit is designed for indoor growing. Choose a clean area away from direct heat sources and draughts. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent overheating. Mushrooms prefer indirect, filtered light.
Please note: Any white-brown bumpy growths indicate early mushroom fruition. These bumps will later become shiitake mushrooms.

Step 1. Prepare the substrate
• Remove the white bag with top soil from the packaging.
• Place the container in a light position at around 15°C (59°F). 
• Avoid direct sunlight to prevent overheating. Mushrooms prefer indirect, filtered light
• Keep the kit covered with the transparent lid until around half of the surface has turned brown.

Step 2. Water immersion
• Immerse the substrate in a bucket of cold water for approximately 24 hours.
• Place a heavy object on top to keep it fully submerged.
Please note: If mushrooms are already growing you may skip the immersion step.

Step 3. Create the right environment
• Remove the substrate from the water and place it into the plastic tray.
• Ensure the surface never dries out.
• Lightly spray at least once a day, keeping it moist but not wet.

Step 4. Harvest
• The harvest period lasts around 1 week.
• Fully grown mushrooms will have caps measuring 4 to 8cm in diameter.

Step 5. Rest and repeat
• After harvesting, allow the kit to rest for at least 15 days.
• Store it somewhere cool and sheltered, such as a garage or garden shed, avoiding dry or hot conditions.
• The next harvest usually arrives after around 10 days.
Please note: Over a period of up to 6 months, you may achieve 5 to 8 harvests.
