Flowering Period
This magnificent and easily distinguished evergreen magnolia is very different from the spring-flowering types. Magnolia grandiflora boasts massive, leather-like, deep glossy foliage with velvety, copper undersides which will provide interest in your garden all year round. A slow-growing variety that will gradually form a very large, rounded tree that makes a superb free-standing specimen or can be trained against a warm, sunny wall. Enormous, bowl-like blooms, measuring up to 25cm in diameter, will burst into bloom in late summer to autumn. Sturdy, cream petals unfurl to reveal luxurious flowers with a heavenly honey and lemon fragrance which contrast beautifully against the deep green leaves. Eye-catching seed pods will follow the flowers, providing a second season of colour and interest. Surprisingly, unlike other varieties, this magnolia will cope well in more alkaline, chalky soils. Height: Over 12m (39ft). Spread: Over 8m (26ft).

Growing Information

Plant in a sunny position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolia grandiflora grows well when trained against a warm, sheltered wall. Plants in unsuitable, exposed positions will suffer winter foliar damage. Suitable for all soils, from acid to alkaline, that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.

Live Plants

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

Large Non-standard items may incur a higher, lorry delivery charge. Charges will be calculated at checkout, but an example of the lorry charges are listed below.

  • Red - £9.99.
  • Purple - £2.99.
