Meconopsis China Blue is a truly stunning perennial that thrives in shady, moist conditions with slightly acidic soil. Its large, saucer-shaped blooms, crafted from petals that resemble delicate silk crepe, shine in a captivating pale cobalt blue. This striking colour contrasts beautifully with the orange and yellow speckles of the stamens at the center. The flowers rise on tall stems above rosettes of bluish-green, finely-haired leaves. Often considered one of the finest blue-flowered Meconopsis, the brilliance of its colour is difficult to capture in photos—its soft glow is best appreciated in person, especially in the half-light. While growing from seed can be challenging, these plugs offer a more accessible and cost-effective way to cultivate these rare gems. Awarded the RHS Garden Merit, this plant reaches a height of 90cm (35 inches) and spreads to 45cm (18 inches).

Growing Information

Pot up meconopsis plants into peaty compost and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions with protection from strong, direct sunlight. When they are well grown, acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, prior to planting out in their final positions. Choose a sheltered spot in semi or dappled shade - a cool, moist woodland situation is ideal, but the Himalayan poppy will also thrive in a moist, shaded border. Meconopsis prefers a rich, moist, neutral to acid, well drained soil that remains moist throughout summer, but does not sit wet in winter.

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

Large Non-standard items may incur a higher, lorry delivery charge. Charges will be calculated at checkout, but an example of the lorry charges are listed below.
