Crocus flowers signal the end of winter and warmer times ahead, making them a firm favourite across the UK. To help you choose the best crocus bulbs for your garden displays we've answered a few popular buying enquiries below:
Try Crocus ‘Botanical Mixed’ for an eye-catching combination of colours. Many crocus varieties are naturalising bulbs and well suited to planting in grass. Start by planting your bulbs close together in groups of ten for an immediate visual effect. As the years pass you’ll see more and more crocus flowers pop up in the lawn.
Crocus sativa bulbs are used to produce saffron. The flowers have bright orange stamens which are carefully collected and dried to make this expensive spice. Plant your crocus sativa bulbs between August and October and pick the delicate stamens from the flowers when they appear in late autumn. Learn how to grow your own saffron at home with our handy online guide.
For a full display, plant between 30 and 50 bulbs. Crocus bulbs are actually corms and are one of the smallest flower bulbs you can buy. If you’re planting a mixed pot display, add your crocus bulbs to the top layer above the bigger spring flowers like alliums and tulips.
Crocus bulbs are ideal for brightening rockery plantings early in the year. Crocus chrysanthus 'Cream Beauty' sends up golden throated blooms in February and March, brightening the front of beds. For a beautiful silvery-purple flower in spring, plant Crocus 'Vanguard'. These large blooms appear from February.
