Plants for Wildlife

Pollinators are creatures that visit our plants to bring about pollination. This is a vital biological process, one which the vast majority of our crops and plants rely on in order to produce the food we eat and the next generation of plants. Our environment depends on them.

Growing plants for pollinators is an absolute joy and something that Suttons along with many others in the horticultural industry are proud to support. Being surrounded by wildlife is not only important to our environment but also enriches our lives.

Over the years sadly we have seen a real decrease in the numbers of pollinators, particularly bees. This is due to many factors, one being habitat loss. This is why it is so important for us gardeners to encourage remaining populations into our gardens, providing food and shelter and the opportunity for them to 'do their work' in sustaining the future of our plants.

Flower shows have illustrated a real increase in the use of pollinator friendly plants and Suttons have a plethora of options available from annuals to perennials and shrubs, available as seeds and/or plants. With over 200 years’ heritage, we have something for everyone, or every insect!

Members of the daisy family are very popular with their single, easily accessible flowers. Echinacea, Rudbeckia or cornflowers are fashionable choices.

Other successful options include Verbena bonariensis and lavender both offering pollinators a purple paradise! The Butterfly Bush (Buddleja) needs no explanation – a good choice for those wanting to give their winged friends something a little larger.

Achillea offer a great landing platform for bees, hoverflies and butterflies and also offer food for birds in the form of their dried seed heads later in the year.

Don't forget your evening time pollinators too! Remember moths also transfer pollen from one plant to another! They love scented white flowers and Nicotiana is a particular favourite. You’ll also benefit too, as the light fades and the white blooms really glow and emit their powerful perfume to be enjoyed by adult and moth alike.

In fact the greater the variety of flowering plants that you grow, the greater number of pollinators will visit!
