What is lycopene?
Lycopene is a bright red compound found naturally in many fruits and vegetables but especially tomatoes. It is thought to be one of the key factors providing the perceived health benefits of a Mediterranean diet and some epidemiological studies suggest an association with reduced cardiovascular disease. It is an antioxidant with the ability to ‘mop up’ damaging free radicals in the body.
Are homegrown tomatoes really better than standard supermarket tomatoes?
With growing interest in healthy eating, a number of plant breeders are trying to identify tomato varieties with naturally higher levels of lycopene. Suttons, and the University of Exeter set out to discover which of these new and traditional varieties contain the very highest levels. We grew over 80 varieties then whittled them down to the 24 which grew well, cropped heavily and tasted great, after all, this is not a purely academic exercise, we are trying to find the best varieties for gardeners to enjoy growing and eating at home! Our trials showed that all tomatoes are not born equal with the best varieties containing a whopping 8 times more lycopene than the lowest. Just out of interest, we tested some standard supermarket tomatoes and guess what. . . . .they came a miserly 23rd out of 24!
So in this instance, growing your own really could be better for you and for the very best results, you should choose one of our ‘high lycopene’ varieties, not just for the health benefits, but because we’ve also made sure that they crop well and taste great too.
