Caring for your avocado plant

Avocado plants thrive in warm, sunny environments making them perfect for a conservatory display. Avocado plants tend to struggle if conditions are too dry or excessively wet; however, they will require watering frequently during the summer season and less often during the winter.

Avocado plants thrive in warm, sunny environments making them perfect for a conservatory display. Avocado plants tend to struggle if conditions are too dry or excessively wet; however, they will require watering frequently during the summer season and less often during the winter.

Once your avocado plant is well established feed it every 7 days or so during the spring and summer seasons. Feed less during the winter, roughly around 6 week intervals. Avocado plants will require pruning to keep them at 1.5 metres. They tend to respond well to hard pruning.

Your plant can be 'stopped' at whatever height you like and it will begin to 'fill out' and form a beautiful specimen. If kept in a warm conservatory and above 10 degrees, plants may start to flower from their third year. Flowers will need pollinating by hand or moving outside during the warmer days of summer for the bees to do the work for you, but don't forget to bring them back inside (after all they are a house plant). It's normal to have a little browning of the leaf tips in winter. The avocado dislikes either excessively wet or dry conditions. Prefers to be watered with rain water.
