When it comes to grass, should we be faking it?
Artificial grass has improved greatly over the years and is used by many sports centres and commercial properties. Back in 1968 Tomorrow’s World launched artificial grass for the home garden with a light-hearted comment that plastic worms and plastic flowers must surely follow.
The number of Suttons customers investing in wormeries would suggest that plastic worms haven’t taken off but recently there has been a large increase in the number of people replacing their lawns at home for a lower maintenance artificial alternative.
Artificial grass creates an instant garden and looks good all year round with minimal upkeep. But. Gardens are a haven for wildlife and that wildlife needs somewhere to feed, to shelter and to live. Also, can you imagine summer without the sweet scent of freshly cut grass?
No mowing means no energy using machinery is required. And if you don’t have a lawn mower, scarifier, shears, etc then you don’t need anywhere to store them.
No watering means you beat any potential hosepipe ban and don’t waste precious water.
Non-toxic so safe for children and pets.
A quality product has a long-life span
The surface is permanently flat and smooth with no trip hazards
Perfect for balconies and similar small areas
Low maintenance means more time to enjoy other areas of the garden
Looks good all year round, whatever the weather
Mean’s you can have “grass” in areas where it will not naturally grow, e.g. deep shade
There can be an issue with surface heat as artificial grass holds more heat than natural grass.
Can melt if something hot, such as a coal from the BBQ, falls on it.
No reduction in carbon dioxide levels
Provides no food for birds in terms of worms, insects and seed heads.
At a time when there is concern for insect levels artificial grass does nothing to encourage and sustain them.
Although the grass will not need mowing it will need to be vacuumed (yes, vacuumed) occasional or cleaned off with a hosepipe.
Can look too perfect! What lawn is complete without a splattering of daisies and sunny yellow dandelions?
Although long lasting it will need replacing at some point which raises both cost and sustainable recycling concerns
When artificial lawns are installed the turf and soil removed often goes to landfill
On balance, it would seem that artificial grass can be a good solution in certain situations but it does need careful consideration.
If for example, you already have a paved area but want to soften it then there are few disadvantages to choosing artificial grass. Or perhaps you have a narrow north facing garden, with high fences and heavy shade? Natural grass won’t grow so artificial may be the answer. The same applies to hardwearing areas such as the patch where the kids like to play football, beneath the trampoline or the pathway in the veg patch or polytunnel.
If, however, you want your garden to be natural, to give something back to nature and to help keep you fit by mowing and edging, then stick with the real thing. Faking it is not for you.
