Lupin seeds - a concise guide

Lupins can be annual or perennial and range from dainty plants that are ideal for the front of a border to tall varieties that will make a statement. Try the vibrant ‘Russell Mix’ for a dramatic display or ‘Snow Pixie’ for a cool colour scheme.

Both can be raised from seed either under cover using a good peat-free compost or direct into the ground although seedlings will need to be protected from slugs and snails.

To get the best results, give them a warm, sunny spot and deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers.

Why grow lupins?

Lupins are versatile plants working well in cottage garden-style planting, more formal mixed borders and sunny gravel gardens with the smaller varieties also suitable for containers.

How to grow lupins from seed

Lupin seed should be sown in spring and will germinate in 10-14 days. Sow single seeds into modules or into drills in a border that has been well prepared. Seedlings in modules should be potted-on into deep pots as lupins have long roots. Plant them out after the last frost after hardening them off for a week.

Ensure plants are kept well-watered during dry spells and give them a seaweed feed in their first summer and a potash feed the following year.

How to germinate lupin seeds

To encourage germination, try nicking the seed with a knife and then soaking it in cold water for 24 hours before sowing.
