Although we are mainly familiar with large yellow trumpets such as 'King Alfred', our own native daffodil in the United Kingdom is in-fact a small daffodil. Narcissus pseudonarcissus is dainty in lemon yellow and cream and prevalent in the Lake District where Wordsworth famously described it and the Golden Triangle of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. It is a stunning choice for naturalising in grass where, when left, it will happily multiply. To achieve a natural display, throw bulbs onto the ground and plant where they land.
'Tete a Tete' daffodil is one of the most popular mini daffodils ever introduced and is seen in pots and borders galore in early spring. Bright yellow and strong, it is reliable and easy to grow and has stood the test of time since its introduction prior to 1949. If you've never grown a daffodil, this is a fabulous starting point.
'Thalia' is the critically acclaimed choice, pure white and elegant - the minature daffodil you will find in the gardens of great estates and regularly named as a favourite of the horticultural elite. This daffodil is also useful for a shady or slightly moist site, whereas most favour sun and well-drained soil. It also holds a pleasant scent. For a quirky option, you can't beat 'Rip Van Winkle' - a ball of spiky petals in bright yellow and one of the best unusual daffodils on sale.
If it's fantastic fragrance that you crave, there are many miniature options. 'Hawera' was introduced around 100 years ago, lemon yellow with many flowers per stem - this is delicately delicious. Meanwhile 'Minnow' with white petals and a yellow centre emits its sweet scent with sophistication. These are charming bulbs for rockeries or pots near doors and pathways. They partner well with other spring bulbs such as grape hyacinths. Being short, they are also excellent choices for exposed spots where taller daffodil relatives may suffer from wind damage.
