Large Cup Daffodil Bulbs

Daffodils herald the arrival of spring and range from the delicate wild species found from the Lake District to Herefordshire to the large bright blooms adorning pots and gardens. With over 25,000 different cultivars, the large cup daffodils are amongst the most recognisable.

In an attempt to organise the many different daffodils (Narcissus) on the market, a classification system has been devised consisting of 13 different divisions. The large cup daffodils are described as Division 2 which is made up of daffodils with one flower per stem where the cup is more than one third but less than equal to the length of the petals.

These really do look like traditional daffodils and come in a wide array of colourations with petals and cups in yellow, orange, white and even pink! The first hint of pink appeared in a large cup daffodil in the 1920s and since then it has become a more popular colour within the daffodil world. Try 'Chromacolour' from Suttons, for a pinky orange cup and pure white petals. Stunning in a border, just plant at a depth of 2-3 times the height of the bulb in a well-drained soil and success is assured.

In 1923 the large cup Narcissus 'Fortune' carried a price tag of £50 per bulb, thankfully today it along with a plethora of other variety choices are much more reasonable, although many specialist varieties can still demand high prices. Suttons offer a wealth of choice at reasonable prices and of particularly good value is our Large Cup Mix. Fabulous for planting out en masse, a springtime of colour is guaranteed.

Although not technically large cup daffodils, the trumpet daffodils (which belong in Division 1) do, by their nature, have large cups. The 'King Alfred' daffodil is a classic daffodil, with yellow petals and trumpet - just as a daffodil should be! This is a heritage daffodil introduced over 100 years ago and still as popular today.

How To Grow Large Cup Daffodils?

Large Cup Daffodils respond well to being grouped together in drifts or pots. (Leave at least 3 inches between bulbs). Plant bulbs in autumn around 2 to 3 times the depth of the bulb and sit back and await a sensational spring.

In addition to these large cup varieties - Suttons also sell unusual, double and scented daffodils - whichever you decide upon, you won't be disappointed.
