Garlic German Red Bulbs
Garlic German Red Bulbs

Garlic German Red Bulbs

Vigorous grower with lush green foliage!
A vigorous grower with lush green foliage that leads to a bold well-formed bulb. All of the cloves are a good size, expect around 8-10 fat ones per bulb which are easy to peel. German Red has a rich, hot spicy flavour which is well suited to dishes that demand plenty of garlic! It's a mid-season variety so the bulbs will be ready to pull from early July and will store up to the end of the year. 2 Bulbs (8-10 cloves per bulb). Hardneck type.
These 'hardneck' (Rocambole) varieties are closest to wild garlic and naturally forms a seed stalk or scape which curls into a characteristic loop. They have their ancestry in northen Europe and are very hardy, so will thrive throughout the UK, and are ideal for more northern areas. Bulbs wrappers on the mature bulbs are quite thin and may have a brownish cast to them meaning that they do not store for as long as some. What they lack in beauty however they more than make up for in flavour and they are regarded as the finest of all garlics in this respect.
Plant our 'hardneck' garlics and you will get a delicious bonus! These varieties produce a green flower stalk - known as a scape - as part of their natural growth cycle and this is usually removed to encourage bulb development. If the scape is cut when it is young and tender it becomes a delicious novel vegetable in its own right. In the US where these garlics hail from, scapes have a real gourmet following and are used in stir fries, sauces and just about any dish where a mild garlic taste is appreciated.

CULTURE: The sections, or cloves of each bulb should be separated and planted just below the soil surface from early November to late December. Space rows 15-20cm (6-8") apart and allow 10cm (4") between cloves. Lift and dry the plants, as with onions, once the foliage turns yellow in July. Full growing instructions included.
HINTS: Garlic has become an essential part of many kitchen gardens as our food tastes have changed and its health benefits have become more widely known (it lowers blood pressure, fat and cholesterol levels and combats infections).
