Saffron Crocus
Grow the most expensive spice in the world
Saffron is the world's most expensive spice.
It has a wonderful sweet, earthy taste, can be used with either sweet or savoury dishes and is a popular spice for rice. And it has a very attractive flower too!
It is remarkably easy to grow. Just plant your bulbs in a sunny spot before the end of August and they will produce beautifully scented blooms.
You could even grow them in pots on your patio.
Coming originally from Nepal, Saffron Crocus (Crocus Sativus) is tough and comes up year after year.
HOW TO HARVEST - Once in bloom, look out for the 'red ribbons' which dangle from the centre of the flower. Pick them with tweezers, dry them and they should last for up to 2 years in an airtight jar.
