Bean (Runner) Seeds - Scarlet Emperor

Phaseolus coccineus
1 Review(s) with an average rating of:
4.0

Very early, and can be grown on supports or as a ground bean.

Heritage Seed Variety, 1895 packet details - Silver-gilt Knightian Medal for Collection of Vegetables, including Sutton's Scarlet Runner Bean.  R.H. Society, Oct 24, 1893. For its profuse crop of large tender pods, this is beyond question one of the best types of runner bean. Both in hot and dry, and also in cold and wet seasons, it has yielded remarkable results, and we can recommend it with confidence either for competition or for ordinary use. The pods grow perfectly straight, to a great length, and they are most attractive on the exhibition table. Very tender when cooked, and of excellent flavour

Sow in April under glass or cloches, or outdoors in May and June. Prolific, decorative plants thriving in well cultivated soils containing plenty of humus. Regular watering in dry periods will be amply rewarded by a heavy crop of delicious, tender young beans for table and freezing. (12-16 weeks maturity.) Packet sufficient for a double row of approximately 4.5m (15').

Recommended for freezing. HEALTH BENEFITS: A good source of vitamin C, folate and iron plus fibre. CULINARY TIPS: Some vitamins can be lost so cook for minimum time only.
