Squash is an increasingly popular vegetable, partly due to the prominence given to it by TV chefs who as well as emphasising the varying flavours of the different sorts, have been quick to illustrate its versatility in food combining. Perhaps one thing no so appreciated is the nutritional value being high in Omega 3 and various vitamins and for the slimmers amongst us - just half the calories of potatoes! Collection contains 6 plants (1 of each variety):
Tromboncino - 'Wacky Italian cultivar with lovely, mild artichoke flavour & a long neck that's 100% free of seeds'. Actually a variety of butternut squash, picked while still tender and green.
Honey Boat - Easier to grow, more productive and sweeter than a butternut squash, Honey Boat produces super sweet fruit with firm, deep orange flesh, and each one makes the perfect size serving for two people. It keeps well throughout winter, and will prove itself invaluable in roasts, soups and a whole host of other dishes. Well worth a try!
Kabocha - You won't be able to resist a Kabocha squash (Japanese winter pumpkin), not only because of their cute size but also because they are tasty and good for you. The flesh near the rind is avodcado green, giving way to a bright yellow-orange. You could microwave or roast them before you scoop out the flesh for a soup or they are delicious stuffed - a multi purpose sweet and savoury squash.
F1 Crown Prince - Ask any allotment veteran their ideal of the best-flavoured winter squash and you can pretty much guarantee this one will come out top of their list. A nutty, honey-like depth and smooth, pudding-like flesh make it a superb choice for roasting. One of the most long-storing of all squashes.
Butterscotch - A compact variety with smaller fruits of 1-2 lbs that mature early. Cooks well in the microwave - pierce the skin in a few places and cook for about 12 minutes. High resistance to powdery mildew.
Spaghetti - A delicious, easy-to-grow variety producing oval-shaped squashes with straw-coloured skin. It boasts excellent eating qualities with unique 'scoop-out' flesh that separates into spaghetti-like pieces. Will store for up to 2 months.
