For planting and growing advice read our general guide to planting fruit trees.

The plum is a very easy fruit to grow in the garden and is capable of yielding huge crops. Plums can be grown as a bush tree yet most modern crops are produced by cultivation in the central leader style. Once the main framework of the tree is established little extra pruning is required beyond removal of damaged or badly placed wood. Pruning is best done in early summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf infection, preferably painting pruning cuts with a sealing compound. In the bottom place a 23cm (9") of tightly packed broken bricks or rubble. Refill with soil adding well rotted manure or garden compost and a little bonemeal. In a pit plant 23cm (9") away from the base of the wall. In both pots and a pit they should be planted firmly.

DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR – The trees are supplied as healthy, dormant, bare root plants, delivered in specially designed protective packaging to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. Trees will be between 4-6' high, some with side branches developing, but please note that size can vary considerably due to the characteristics of different varieties. All come complete with comprehensive growing instructions. ROOTSTOCKS – Most fruit trees are grafted onto a closely related species 'rootstock' to predetermine the size and vigour of the tree and give the best possible yields. We have carefully chosen semi-dwarfing rootstocks (all of which are certified virus-free) to ensure that our trees grow, crop well and remain of manageable size in your garden. POLLINATION – Our cherries, apricots and quince are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator. Many of our apple, pear and plum fruit tree varieties will also pollinate themselves satisfactorily, however, the best fruit set is achieved by choosing at least two varieties from a species (unless your neighbours have trees that will act as pollinators!)

Bought this as a package with 3 apple trees and a Morello cherry in 2006. 8 plums in summer 2007 then, apart from last year, pounds and pounds of fruit, so much so that the making of plum and apple jam is an annual ritual. Our tree still looks like a weeping twig (the lead stem snapped in the first year), but has been a fantastic cropper.
