Ideal for patio pots The Cape Gooseberry originated in Brazil but soon spread to most of South America. In the 18th century the fruits were perfumed and used as an adornment by the women of Peru. It was brought to England in 1774 and its extremely sweet fruits soon became a favourite for greenhouse and conservatory growing. The ripe fruits are a good source of Vitamin B and Pectin. Dwarf Gold is a compact form for growing in containers in the conservatory or on the patio. Culture: Sow in pots or a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approx. 20°C (68°F) using a good quality, moist compost and cover the seed lightly. Place in a polythene bag to maintain humidity. Following germination which takes 10-20 days, reduce night temperatures to 15°C (60°F). Transplant seedlings to 75mm (3") pots. Grow on and transplant into 41cm (16") pots, 3 plants per growbag or in the greenhouse border. Remove shoot tips to restrict growth if plants become ‘rampant’ in hot weather. Plants will crop 13-17 weeks from sowing.
