Capsicums are members of the Nightshade family - but the fruit are not poisonous! A native of the Americas, they have been cultivated for thousands of years. Various types are used as spices, vegetable or medicines. High in vitamin C, capsicums evolved their bright colours in nature to encourage birds and thence spread the seed.
Culture: Sow in a propagator on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approx. 18-21°C (65-70°F) using a good quality compost. Cover the seeds with 6mm (¼") sieved compost. Germination 14-21 days. Transplant the resulting seedlings into 7.5cm (3") pots, and grow on in good light indoors or in a greenhouse. Plant out into greenhouse soil, or tubs on a sunny patio (May-June). Plants will commence cropping from August onwards. Support plants with canes as fruit develops. Feed regularly with a proprietary fertiliser.
