Primroses are the prima, or first, “roses” of the year to flower in our gardens. These heralds of spring are traditionally pale yellow but are also available in a wide range of vibrant colours as illustrated below.
Preferring cool semi-shaded areas of the garden primrose plants are ideal for woodland edges, banks and for growing under hedgerows. In a well-drained yet moist soil primroses will flower year on year and will readily self-seed and naturalise.
With Suttons being based at Paignton, Devon and the native primrose being the county flower of Devon there is little wonder why we are so fond of this charming harbinger of spring.
