How to Plant Bedding Plants

First, decide on the colour schemes and plant combinations you wish to achieve - are you looking for harmonious colour combinations or bold contrasting schemes?

Consider how large the plants are going to grow and think about the patterns you wish to make with them within the bed or border. Plant tall items in the middle of a bed or the rear of a border, and low-growing plants at the edge.

Do not plant bedding plants when it's too hot, and remember to water them thoroughly first, while they're still in their trays.

Ensure that the planting area is free from weeds and thoroughly cultivated with a fork.

With a trowel, dig a hole slightly bigger than the root of the plant. Remove the plant from its pot or tray, trying not to disturb the roots. position it into the hole and then draw the surrounding soil back in and firm gently. Water plants thoroughly and protect from slugs and snails.

Spring Bedding Plants

Not long from now, when summer bedding comes to an end, the garden starts to fade. Autumn and winter bedding plants will provide some colour immediately, and throughout the coldest and darkest days of winter, and spring bedding plants will flower for weeks on end throughout spring!

Growing on your young plants

On receipt of your plans carefully unpack and check the compost is moist. Should the compost be dry water the plants carefully using a small watering can, and allow to drain.

A 7cm pot filled loosely with moist compost is ideal to plant these sturdy young plants into. In each pack you will find a dibber stick. Gently push it through the base hole of each cell and ease the plant and root plug out of the tray, placing it into the centre of the filled pot until the roots of the plug are covered. Firm the compost gently around the base of the plug whilst ensuring the stem and leaves remain above the top layer.

Alternatively, plant into trays of compost. A 36x22cm (14x81⁄2″) tray will hold up to 24 plants. Grow on in a light place at a temperature of 16 °c (60°F).The plants can be planted outdoors once they have a strong root system and the danger of frost has passed which in most areas is during late May/early June.
